Projects: 2003-2004 - Final Report to the Club

Completed Projects (7)         (Total cost: $404,080; Rotary Club of Fort Collins share: $18,709)

  1. Dengue Fever in Indonesia (3-H #00-114)          Started 8/04
    The Foundation approved a grant of $200,000, Rotary Club of Fort Collins and others contributed an additional $20,000, and CDC added $75,000 for this project, which is targeting 14 major urban areas in Indonesia. The project includes educational programs for the public and medical personnel, patterned after the highly successful project in Purwokerto (MG#7365). Dutch Gubler is providing technical guidance for the project, which has the support of both the Indonesian government and WHO, as well as District 3400 in Indonesia, and the U.S.CDC. Training of Rotarians and local personnel involved in the project began last July, and the project is now underway.

  2. Microcredit Band in Indonesia (MG #16373)          Started 2/03
    Under this project, small loans (typically $100 or less) are provided to poor women to begin or expand small home enterprises with which they can support themselves and their families. The loans must be repaid with interest, with the funds then available for additional loans. Funding has been provided and loans have been made, with supervision by members of the Rotary Club of Purwokerto Hapsari in Central Java, District 3400, and by a Rotary Community Corps in the city. The initial loans have been completed, but the project will continue as loans are repaid.

  3. Beef Cattle in Salatiga (MG #21178)          Started 11/04
    The new Rotary Club of Salatiga is assisting villagers to purchase and fatten beef cattle for sale, with the proceeds used by a local Rotary Community Corps to provide improved health and education for children of the village. The children suffer from diabetes, tuberculosis, and other illnesses, which also interferes with their education.

  4. Water Treatment Plant in Colombia (MG #19142)          Started 11/04
    $17,000 is needed to provide electric power and pumps to operate the water treatment plant for San Isidro, Colombia. A request for a Matching Grant has been submitted to the Foundation for half the cost, and funds have been contributed for the local share.

  5. Marine Education and Conservation in the Solomon Islands (MG #21917)          Started 11/04
    A project to educate native Islanders in conservation and utilization of marine resources, and to encourage development of local enterprises, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy and the Rotary Club of Honiara. Funds will provide a satellite office to support the program with HF radio, solar power system, and desktop computer/printer equipment. Local islanders will build the office with local materials, and the Nature Conservancy will provide equipment, furniture, training, and expatriate staff.

  6. School for Disabled Children in India (MG #21911)          Started 11/04
    This project will provide equipment and facilities for a residential school for disabled children in Kundapura, India. The school serves 100 children from rural areas around Kundapura. The project includes hearing aids, furniture, kitchen equipment, and sanitary waste system.

  7. West Nile Fever Project (not a matching grant)          Started 11/04
    A new project initiated and completed during the 2003-04 year, to develop a public informatioin program about West Nile Fever for implementation by Rotary Clubs in cooperation with local health authorities. The project included a videotape and CD Rom presentation developed by Rotarian Maury Dobby (Media Tech), in partnership with CDC and Rotary.

  1. Avoidable Blindness in Indonesia (MG #22367)          Started 7/02
    The project will provide training of personnel in detection and prevention of eye diseases in Cirebon, Purbalingga, and Purwokertom Central Java. Included is a pilot program to provide improved nutrition with Vitamin A for children, and checking vision of elementary school students, with glasses provided where needed.

  2. Dengue Fever in Argentina (MG # 12426)          Started 11/03
    The Ibajay Small Coconut Farmers Development Cooperative is a 2000 member village coop on the island of Panay in the Philippines that grows coconuts as a rural enterprise. The coconut husks are processed into coconut fiber, converted into twines by a spinning wheel, and woven into nets using a loom. The grant was used to build twiners, looms and a roof for the weavers at the coop.

  3. Dengue Fever in Bali (MG #19658)          Started 2/03
    A project to reduce the incidence of Dengue Fever in Denpasar, Dali, a city of 475,000 persons. The program will provide organized inspection and elimination of mosquito breeding sites in and around homes, education of adults and children, and training of medical personnel in diagnosing and treating the disease.

  1. Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia          Started 2/05
    A project with the RC of Addis Ababa Bole to provide beds, furniture, and equipment for a hostel for young indigent women seeking treatment at the fistula hospital in Addis Ababa. The women suffer from fistula problems incurred during child delivery which causes them to be outcasts from their own families.
    (Cost: $15,000; FC share: $2,000)

  2. Dengue Fever in Guatemala
    A project to reduce or eliminate the incidence of Dengue Fever in Gualan, Zacapa, Guatemala, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Gualan. The project will include training of medical personnel, education of public, and extensive efforts to reduce breeding sites for the Aedes Egypti mosquito.

  1. Micro Ear Surgery Project in Godabanahal, India           Started 1/04
    A project to provide water to three villages in Colombia, from the slow sand-filter water treatment plant previously completed in San Isidro, Colombia by matching grants from our club.

  2. Dental Project in Mexico (MG #53113)          Started 11/04
    Providing portable dental equipment for use by volunteer dintists and assistants in furnishing badly needed dental care to poor residents in villages around Torreon, Mexico, in partnership with the RCof Torreon.

  3. Coconut Fiber Processing in Inajay, Philippines (MG # 51528)          Started 11/03
