The Poudre River Learning Center Site Plan

WHAT IS THE POUDRE LEARNING CENTER?

In Northern Colorado, along the Cache la Poudre River, a year round teaching area will soon be constructed to serve students of all ages.   With Rotary involvement, The Poudre Learning Center is on schedule to open in April 2005.  The Center will be a living laboratory where users come to understand the role of water in the evolution of Northern Colorado.

In a unique partnership, the three Rotary Clubs from Greeley and the Windsor club joined the school districts of Eaton, Evans, Greeley, Johnstown, Milliken, and Windsor, the Poudre Trail Education Group and historic Hazelton School preservationists, to form a Colorado nonprofit corporation.  The dream of the corporation is to enrich academic programs at a 65-acre conservation site donated by George Hall and the Hall Irwin Corporation.    Here, through classroom work, experiences in demonstration gardens, water areas, and wetlands, an innovative educational program will be run for students of all ages.   This innovative educational facility including an 18-acre lake will bring together the study of the working Poudre River and its place in the Platte River System.   The program will focus on economics, history, and the sciences as users study the river and how it is provides for industry, agriculture, and municipal needs.

Under the direction of Rotarians, a capital campaign is now underway to complete the construction of the Poudre Learning Center classroom building and the immediate parcel with habitat, demonstration areas and parking.   Local Rotarians are providing fund raising, professional services and construction management as our project to celebrate Rotary International’s centennial year.   To fund the building and associated outdoor areas charitable gifts are being sought from Rotarians, other community members, businesses and foundations.     After construction, the Learning Center Board of Directors will take over maintenance and operations of the center.
