Matthew McIntosh, a Senior at Steamboat Springs High School is Rotary’s Student of the Month for September of 2008. Matt is the son of Susan and Rusty McIntosh. He was honored at the regular meeting of the Steamboat Springs Rotary Club on September 9, 2008.

Matt has been instrumental in the creation and success of the Interact Club which promotes the vision and goals of the Rotary Club in high school and develops community involvement skills in students. Matt is also active in the school’s EPYCS organization which raises awareness and recommends disbursal of funds to address school and community needs.

“Matt is one of the busiest students in our school. His involvement is school and community activities, humble leadership and outstanding character are unsurpassed”, SSHS Principal Kevin Taulman said.

McIntosh participates in the school’s Future Business Leaders of America and also worked as a build captain for the elementary school playground project this summer.

Rotary Student Coordinator Dan Callahan presented the Student of the Month honor to Matt. “Matt is a wonderful example of the community spirit Rotary encourages and we are pleased to recognize his efforts”, Callahan said.

Hundreds of volunteers joined Steamboat Springs Rotarians to begin constructing two fully-accessible playgrounds at Strawberry Park and Soda Creek Middle Schools. Work began on Thursday, July 24th to unload hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of playground equipment purchased with funds raised by the “Let’s All Play” Committee co-chaired by Julie Taulman and Shelly St. Pierre.

Rotarians Ben Northcutt, Kemp Bohlen, Jane Denning and Angela Catterson organized the volunteers, provided work assignments, and kept people fed and in good spirits.

By Sunday the initial concrete had been poured at both sites to stabilize footings and all of the major structures had been assembled and placed.

Most assembly will be completed by Monday, July 28th. In the coming weeks the land will be graded and prepared for underground heating equipment, cement flooring and rubberized surfaces.

Sandy Evans Hall has been named one of the Outstanding Club Presidents in the Rotary District, which includes 50 clubs in Northern Colorado, Wyoming, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska. The award was presented by District Governor Nancy Pettis at the recent Rotary Conference in Cody, Wyoming.

Hall has served as president of the Steamboat Springs Rotary Club since July, 2008. Under her leadership the 100-member club launched a Rotary Interact Club at the Steamboat Springs High School, adopted a long-range strategic plan, adopted new bylaws and set up a new public website and club management software system.

The club was also very active the past year in a number of community projects including the distribution of 250 flower barrels in public and business locations throughout the city, the distribution of $6,000 collected during the holiday season to senior citizen projects, distributed dictionaries all third grade students in the area, provided more than $20,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors and grants to local non-profit organizations.

Mike Forney was installed at the Steamboat Springs Rotary Club President at Rex’s American Grill on July 1. His term runs through June 30, 2009. Outgoing President Sandy Evans Hall passed the gavel to Forney after presenting awards to club members for extraordinary accomplishments.

Jane Denning was named Rotarian of the Year for her contributions to a variety of club activities. Denning, Senior Escrow Officer at LandAmerica Transnation Title serves on the Rotary board of directors. “Jane is a dedicated Rotarian who consistently steps up when something needs doing,” Evans Hall said.

Others recognized for “service above self” included Jay O’Hare for his successful efforts to create a club website and internet-based membership system, Chan Coyle for his contributions to strategic planning and membership, Holly Larson who was instrumental in establishing the club’s first high school Rotary Interact Club, and Scott Marr for his dedication as Club Treasurer and leadership in the just completed Ski Town USA Golf Classic.

Customize LinksSteamboat Springs Rotarians toted shovels, rakes, hoes and wheelbarrows to one of Horizon’s resident houses near the Steamboat Springs High School to dig out a large, heavily weeded area and transform it into a vegetable garden on May 21st during the United Way Day of Caring.

Dan Hagney organized Rotarians and directed the spadework. Rotarians Jim Moylan, Ben Northcutt, Jon Faulkner, Mike Forney, Brian Harvey, J.P. Stone and Suzanne Schlicht dug out grass and debris and transformed the weed patch into a ready-to-plant garden. Two-year-old David Schlicht served as “worm-master,” helping the crew uncover the squiggly critters and turning his share of dirt too.

Jessica Fox, a senior at SSHS, was named Rotary’s May Student of the Month according to Steamboat Springs Rotary Club president Sandy Evans Hall. Fox was presented with the award at the regular Rotary meeting at the Steamboat Grand to receive the award.

Jessica was nominated by Kelle Schmidt, SSHS guidance counselor and Cynthia Jamison Gay, the school’s National Honor Society Advisor and science teacher. “She has tremendous potential to succeed at any level of academia and has shown incredible leadership skills,” Schmidt said.

She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average and has been on the High Academic Honor Roll every semester and a member of the National Honor Society… She is currently enrolled in four advanced preparation classes according to Cynthia Gay.

She is the captain of her hockey team, one of the youngest individuals to receive her SCUBA diving certification, and is actively pursuing certification as a hot air balloon pilot. She organized the school’s homecoming parade this year and put together a team that participated in the Relay for Life Cancer Walk. Jessica plans to pursue a degree in pre-medicine that will prepare her for a career as a medical doctor.

Rotary Interact members from Steamboat Springs High School, parents, Steamboat Rotarians and Rotary District Governor Nancy Pettus gathered for potluck and praise Monday night, March 31 to celebrate the official recognition of the Steamboat Interact Club as the 19th club in Rotary District 5440.

Interactors Rianna Marr and Jan Anderson organized the evening with serving tables and lovely flower decorations ($10 goes a long way at the Dollar Store!). Interact President Meghan Hanrahan and VP Matt McIntosh gave stirring speeches about their motivation to serve others through the Interact Program.

Responding to the Interact Club request for “Spring Black Tie,” Rotarians Brooks Kellogg and Mike Forney garnered “oohs and ahhs” in their full-blown tuxedos, studs and all. “We just wanted our kids to dress a little better than sneakers and jeans,” Rianna Marr told Rotarians.

District Governor Nancy Pettus and her husband Bill (a past district governor) traveled to Steamboat Springs from Jackson Hole, Wyoming to present the Interact Charter. They were joined by Assistant District Governor Nancy Muldoon.
