United Way of Weld County

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Ron Clark announced that the President of Rotary International, Bill Boyd, will be speaking at the Ranch in a couple of months. The clubs in this area are going to host the event and to that end, we are having a planning session at breakfast on Thursday, October 26.

Next week, the club will have a club assembly to bring everyone up to date on what the plans are, what the various committees are doing, and what we have accomplished so far this year.

PROGRAM
Our speaker for last week was Christi Smith Director of Resource Development for United Way of Weld County. Christi is originally from Texas, but has lived in Greeley for the last ten years. She is married and has two grown children. She told us that United Way started in Denver in 1887. Each United Way chapter is governed by a local board of governors, and there is only a loose association with the National Office. She talked to us about what has happened recently that affects Windsor, As an example she cited the Windsor/Severance 211 system which is a health and human services referral system. Five years ago you would have had to call over 500 separate 1-800 numbers to get the information that you can now get by dialing 211.

Two years ago, United Way ran a community assessment and found that 7 out of 10 children were not ready to start school. (It was 5 out of 10 in Windsor). To mitigate that problem, United Way started Family School Literacy Carnivals where the entire family of preschoolers could come and learn how to better prepare children for school. Each child was given something to take home with them. These items related to music, letters, puppets and books. The entire packet is worth about $50, but Christi says she can buy them for about $30 each. The goal is to have young children better prepared for school so that they can learn to read faster and better which, in the long run, translates to a higher graduation rate in high school.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Five Rotarians worked Saturday to hang drywall in the Habitat house in Severance. Chris Leffler led the way with help from Doug Couse, Mike Carry, Ralph Moore, and Bruce Florquist. The lady that will own the house was there working hard and she had a smile on her face the entire time. I think it is safe to say that house will be well cared for when completed and occupied. She has three children, two of which will live in their own home with their mother when finished.

QUIZ ANSWER
