Emergency Services for Children

GUESTS
It was a delight to welcome so many guests last week. In addition to the speaker, there were six guests. Bill Allen (father of Susan Van Deren and former Cheyenne Rotarian) was a guest along with Stephanie Watson (Assistant Superintendent of Schools), Charlotte Ryan (who worked the Health Fair), Tammy Applegate, and Peter Jochems. Scott Rulon was a visiting Rotarian.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Ron Clark announced that a GSE team from New Zealand will be here May 17.

PROGRAM
Our speaker for the week was Melody Mesmer. She is the EMS Coordinator for St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver. In addition, she is the coordinator for the Central Mountain Region EMS and Trauma Advisory Council (RETAC). When she has time, she also volunteers as a paramedic/firefighter at Elk Creek Fire Protection District in Conifer where she worked for five years as a paramedic.

The topic of her talk was "Emergency Services For Children". She worked on the Gulf Coast for a month after Hurricane Katrina from Mississippi to Florida, and later in Texas. She said that despite all the bad press about FEMA's response, to a large degree FEMA's hands are tied as they cannot respond unless specifically asked to do so by the appropriate state agency. She commented about some of the mistakes that are made in handling emergencies, especially when children are involved. For instance, she talked about the Snaking Fire that was started behind Platte Canyon School. (The same school where Emily Keyes was killed). The school administrators put the children on buses and sent them home never thinking that it was the middle of the day, many of the parents were at work, and some of the homes where they were dropped off could have been in the path of the fire. She also sited a more even recent example during the latest snow storm where the El Paso County Schools closed and sent children out on buses, many of which got stuck in the snow. Numerous kids were forced to be taken into private homes in the area. The irony is that the school they left was then turned into an emergency shelter.

Mesmer also talked about how most agencies are woefully unprepared to handle children, elderly, disabled, and pets during an emergency. She sited instances where after Katrina; some children were not re-united with their parents for up to seven months. She passes out information on creating a 72-hour home preparedness kit. Mesmer said we must understand that sooner or later, an emergency will happen in your community.

Mom's Club of the Windsor Area

GUESTS
We were graced with guests and visiting Rotarians. Visiting Rotarians included Doug DiMercurio, recently returned from the Boston Marathon. We were also visited by Greeley Redeye Rotarians (the club, not their physical appearance) Norma Carter and Fern Koehler who were here to promote their annual begonia sale. Bruce Florquist brought Dawn Brodzeller, Mayor Pro-Tem of the Town of Severance as his guest.

PROGRAM
We were pleased to have three members of the Mom's Club of the Windsor Area as our guest presenters. Margaret Blythe is the founder and president of the local chapter. She was assisted by Karen Hayes and Tiffany Metcalf. They also brought some of their children who said hello to the group, and then went to play in the gym.

The Mom's Club is a support group for stay-at-home mothers. The local group was founded in June 2005 and now has 39 mothers with an aggregate of about 70 children. They have an interactive on-line calendar so that moms can post play dates, outings and other information for members of the group. They have held numerous fund raisers with the bulk of the money going to charities for women and children. Karen Hayes discussed how hard it was for her when she moved to the area. She was pregnant at the time and knew few people. She joined the Mom's Club when her baby was six months old. The Mom's Club provided support and fellowship with women in similar circumstances.

Blythe told us that prospective members must attend two meetings before they decide to join. The fees are $20 per year which covers administration costs. They would like mothers to stay in the club after their children enter school. Activities for moms and kids include educational tours, fun times, family involvement, camping, bowling, and a frequent "tribal bash" where they prepare a dinner for the night.

We were graced with guests and visiting Rotarians last week. Susan Van Deren brought Marika Ujvari as her guest. Those of you who worked the Health Fair may remember her as one of the volunteers. Shannon Spangler brought her husband Brock. Shane Sparks was a visiting Rotarian from the Loveland club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
We were delighted to induct Bryon McAvoy as our newest member. Bryon is the owner of Tri-Tech Security here in Windsor.

President Ron Clark again announced the District Conference and made a call for items to be sold at silent auction during the conference.

PROGRAM
We are always delighted to hear from our own members, and Karen Trusler did not disappoint us last week. Karen, who is Superintendent of the Windsor RE-4 School District, gave an informative and well planned presentation on the "State of Our Schools". It was obvious from her presentation that she has a passion for education and our community.

She presented information, student counts, history, and other data about every school in the district. There are nearly 3700 students in the district which are served by a full-time staff of nearly 400. Karen said that there are about 600 on the payroll when you count substitute teachers and part-timers. The district is broken up into five areas with a board representative from each of the areas.

The oldest building in the system is the original building which makes up the Middle School dating back to 1927. There have been a number of additions since that time. Karen also talked about the current and planned growth in the area which will demand additional or expanded schools soon. To that end, the District is planning on a bond election next year to fund these new facilities. She said there is a great need for schools in the Severance area.

QUIZ ANSWER
Sir Bruce Fraser, Sir Thomas Blamey, and General Yoshijiro Umezu were standing on the deck of the USS Missouri during the unconditional surrender by Japan on the morning of September 2, 1945? (Aside: It was told to me by a sailor who served on the Missouri that when Adm. William Halsey was advised that Adm. Nimitz and Gen. Macarthur were taking over the ship to go into Tokyo Harbor for the surrender, Halsey announced the move by saying over the ship's loud speaker system, "Well boys, we've been pissed out of our ship").

9 HEALTH FAIR
The Windsor Rotary Club had one of its finest hours (make that 6-7 hours) this last week as it hosted the 9 Health Fair at the Windsor Middle School. It was a near 100% turnout for the event which has grown every year. This year, it is estimated that over 750 people were served by the heath fair. By 10:30 the original 735 forms were used and the blood draw had run out of tubes. There were lines out to nearly the front door for several hours. Kudos to Jody Niswender and Karen Kunz for once again pulling off a fantastic event.
