Rotary Foundation Month Program

Frank Devlyn
Frank Devlyn, author of Frank Talk: How YOU Can Make a Difference in Your Career, Your Community and Your World Through Membership in Rotary, is president of the Devlyn Optical Group of Mexico, a manufacturer, distributor and retailer of optical products.

In Mexico, Devlyn was president of the Vecino Vigilante program, a nationwide neighborhood watch initiative sponsored by Rotary and other civic organizations. The program addresses crime through preventative neighborhood coalitions and works with local and national governments to ensure aggressive action is taken when a crime has been committed.

Devlyn has served The Rotary Foundation as trustee and Rotary International as director, aide to the president, district governor and advisor to Rotary's 1996 International Convention Committee in Calgary, Canada. He has acted as Rotary's national advocacy advisor for polio in Mexico and a member of one of Rotary's future planning committees.

Founder of Rotarismo en Mexico, Rotary's national magazine in Mexico, Devlyn has also been a tireless promoter of Rotary's developed-to-developing country assistance program, World Community Service. He created the largest used eyeglass bank in Mexico which today serves as a model for cooperative donation-in-kind efforts between Rotary clubs located in different countries.

He is past president of Mexico's National Association of Opticians and Optometrists and of the optical section of the National Chamber of Industry, and acts as national advisor for the Mexican Government's commission on health to the handicapped and serves on the board of the National Bank of Mexico, Inverlat Bank, the Mexican Red Cross and Goodwill Industries.

Bonnie Titley
Chuck Rutenberg announced that shirts with the Rotary Wheel and our club name are available. Chuck invited Susie Ewing to the podium to model one of the shirts. See Susie if you would like to purchase a shirt.

Bart Kingman again appologized for the lost makeup data for the last quarter, between July 1 and September 30, 2007. He said that a form is available at the secretary's table, for those who would like to get credit for any makeups. The data was lost due to a computer crash.

Bonnie Titley noted that when she and Connie Pfeiffenberger visited Peru a week ago that the Rotary Wheel was seen in many places, indicating that alot of Rotary sponsored projects are going on in Peru. She said that there was even a plaque with a Rotary Wheel at Machu Picchu and that the rediscoverer of that site in 1911, Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, was a Rotarian.

Committee Spotlight
Merit Badge University Committee
Chair:       Mike Stradt
Meeting time: Call of the Chair
Purpose:
To support the youth of our community through assisting boys, 11 to 17 years old, complete Boy Scout merit badges. It provides Rotarians a chance to share their profession or avocations with the young people of our community while providing the boys with an organized format to learn skills that will help them, and their community, for their entire lives.

Mike Stradt
Guidelines:
Merit Badge University occurs on the first two Saturdays of January, 8:00 to 12:00 am.
Rotarians volunteer to teach or assist in a class room setting in one of 20-24 merit badges being offered. The list of badges is distributed in November along with a merit badge book and computer codes to help the instructors plan their presentation.
Other Rotarians may volunteer to work the second Saturday by reviewing and checking off homework boys need to do for some badge requirements.
Rotarians may determine if the boys may follow up with the Rotarian to complete any remaining requirements after the two one hour sessions or just continue through Boy Scout channels.

Members can find information about all committees by visiting the online list of all of the club's committees on the web at: FC Rotary Club Committees

Teacher of the Month

Garth McCann

Mary Klass
Garth McCann introduced Preston Junior High assistant principal John Howe who then introduced the teacher of the month, Mary Klass. Mary took a unique approach in her presentation. She talked about her experiences outside the classroom, particularly those about where and when she meets present students, past students and past students who have sons or daughters currently in her class. One of our current members, Tanis Roeder, was a past student as well as the son of one of our members, Patrick Piche, who was present at the meeting. One unique encounter was while she was on vacation in Texas and met a former student who was there playing a soccer match. Another happened when she got a note from the Larimer County Detention Center and later a visit from the sender. More about Mary will be loaded in the new website at: www.rotarycluboffortcollins.org, under "About Us/What's New."

Last Week's Program

Lloyd Thomas

Walley Van Sickle
Lloyd Thomas introduced Wally Van Sickle, a friend, member of the After Work Rotary Club and a fellow volunteer at Young RYLA, to speak about the organization he founded in 1991, IDEA WILD. IDEA WILD makes small grants that average around $600 per grant to researchers who study the biodiversity of the world.

The theme of this presentation was the power of the small grant to make significant contributions to help reduce the loss of biodiversity of the planet. Wally told us why he started IDEA WILD, gave us lots of examples of the type of grant, indicated the number of grants they give and most importantly, many reasons why small grants are important.

He started IDEA WILD due to a National Geographic article that listed six issues that would affect mankind for the next 1000 years. One of those issues was the conservation of biodiversity. He said that biodiversity includes every single living thing that is on earth and that provides us with everything that supports our existence.

Wally was trained as a wildlife biologist and before starting IDEA WILD described himself as a spoiled biologist. In his projects he had all the tools, helicopters, airplanes, radio telemetry, wheels, snowmobiles, horses; everything a biologist could dream of to help. Since most of the earth's biodiversity is in a zone close to the equator and in generally poor countries, the local biodiversity researchers lack many tools to do their work. Thus the purpose of IDEA WILD is, "to create an organization that works to minimize the loss of biodiversity by empowering people who work on the front line of conservation."

Wally gave examples of the biodiversity researchers that get his organizations grants. They ranged from Madagascar to Mexico to Colombia to the Philippines to Costa Rica and included studies of bats, birds, frogs, mushrooms sloths, etc. The organization gives about 33 grants per month. To date they have made about 1900 grants to researchers he called his heroes and sheroes. Since the equipment is passed on to additional users an average of three times, their grants have helped about 5700 projects.

He emphasized how this large number of small grants can have enormous power. They:

Create cultures of biological conservationalists
Build armies of conservationalists, not empires
Identify what is really needed (support in-country researchers)
Provide experience and expertise
Fosters creativity
Builds trusting relationships
Motivates present and future efforts
Builds professional clout
Changes consciousness about nature
Empower nationals not gringos (Wally considers himself a gringo)
Wins awards
Fulfills dreams

One of those dreams was Wally's which went from the first ten dollar donation to IDEA WILD to the donation by Ray Young, the owner of Natures Own, of the first floor of 201 Linden Street, a constant source of income. He also informed us of our ability to help if we make purchases at Jax Outdoor Gear . Jim Quinlan, owner of Jax and IDEA WILD board member, will donate 10% of any purchase to IDEA WILD if the purchaser indicates they donate to IDEA WILD.
